About the University Cancer Research Fund

Mission Based Budget for Year 2 (2008-09)

The University Cancer Research Fund’s budget of $40 million for 2008-09 continues to accelerate progress in the three broad strategic areas outlined in our mission: Discovery, Innovation, and Delivery. Within these three areas, we have seven research strategies:

  1. Assess cancer in North Carolina and change outcomes ($4.6M).
We will better understand who gets cancer, paying particular attention to racial and socio-economic disparities.
We will research how best to talk about and persuade North Carolinians to take steps to prevent cancer or find it early.
  2. Bring knowledge about the genetics of cancer to clinical settings ($5.1M).
We will better understand not only how certain genes may lead to cancer but how genes might help us identify who benefits most from certain drugs or other treatment.
  3. Turn basic research into new drugs and other cancer therapies ($6.45M).
We will further examine cancer cells to find cancer’s weak spots, design models that help us understand how cancer works in humans, and then develop new drugs and other technologies that effectively target cancer’s vulnerabilities.
  4. Monitor patients’ early response to therapy and speed clinical trials ($6.8M).
We will evaluate new drugs as quickly and as safely as we can and speed the process for bringing the treatment that works to patients.
  5. Enhance clinical excellence and apply findings to offer world-class patient care across the state ($6.35M).
Enhance clinical excellence and apply findings to offer world-class patient care across the state* (*$6.35M*).We will enhance our excellence in quality multidisciplinary cancer care at UNC and the N.C. Cancer Hospital and then expand outreach to spread best practices to healthcare professionals and patients across the state.
  6. Launch nation-leading research on cancer survivorship ($1.7M).
We will launch a nation-leading study of factors that affect the growing population of cancer survivors – a number now approaching 11 million nationwide.
  7. Invest in leading-edge researchers and innovative research ideas ($9.0M).
We will build our research capacity and push our research forward by recruiting and supporting outstanding faculty, adding technology, and competitively stimulating innovative research ideas.

To prepare for the future, we have launched a strategic planning process (led by AltshulerGray LLC) to focus our research on areas most likely to reduce North Carolina’s cancer burden and build our reputation as the country’s leading university-based cancer research programs. We have also launched an independent evaluation led by Constella Group LLC.
