The University Cancer Research Fund stimulates novel research and programs through its competitive awards: Innovation Awards, Clinical Innovation Awards, Core Facility Pilot Project Awards, and Equipment Awards.

These awards promote ground-breaking cancer research across the broad continua of cancer - from fundamental laboratory science to community intervention, from disease prevention to palliative care, and from childhood to adult.
The deadline for the 2009 Innovation Awards is 5 pm EDT, October 30, 2009. The next round of awards will have a late April, 2010 deadline.
The Clinical Innovation Awards support novel programs that demonstrate significant potential for innovation in patient care and services and elevate current care models or break new ground at UNC at Chapel Hill. Awards can address needs across the clinical spectrum from early detection to palliative care, and from childhood to adult. Clinical programs with promise for future sustainability are encouraged. Clinical or clinical / translational research projects are not eligible for Clinical Innovation Awards.
The deadline for the 2009 Awards is 5 pm EDT, October 30, 2009.
These awards, which are jointly supported by the University Cancer Research Fund and the TRaCs Institute / Clinical Translational Science Award, support researchers initiating projects using technology in one or more of UNC core resources. Funding is to support analyses necessary for investigators to acquire the preliminary results needed for successful grant applications (new or competitive renewal) for longer-term funding.
The deadline for applications is 5 pm EDT, September 28, 2009. The next round of applications is expected in January, 2010.
The UCRF supports awards for the purchase of new, shared research equipment that will improve and enhance cancer research at UNC Chapel Hill. The deadline for submissions is Friday October 9, 2009. Please submit your request electronically to Dede Corvinus (dede_corvinus@med.unc.edu). Below is the official announcement and required application template. It is anticipated that this will be the only submission for 2009-2010.
Through Spring 2009, the Fund has had three rounds of Innovation Awards, two rounds of Clinical Innovation Awards, and two rounds of Core Facility Pilot Project Awards. For the Innovation Awards, the Fund has received 231 applications and made 43 awards (18.6% funding rate) totaling $6.4 million. For the Clinical Innovation Awards, the Fund has received 33 applications, including 22 that were responsive to guidelines. The program has made 17 awards totalling $1.01 million. For the first two rounds of the Core Facility Pilot Project Awards, the Fund/TRaCs institute has received 70 applications and made 25 awards totaling $488,000.
